Patidar, David blaze away
Patidar has played some special shots. When Noor tossed one up outside off – it wasn’t a half-volley but Patidar made it look like one – he crashed it over extra-cover. Then when Khaleel marginally missed his yorker outside off, Patidar carved it over the same region for the same result.
At the other end, David goes 6,6,6, leaving Noor nursing figures of 4-0-49-0. He’s now gone wicketless in three games this IPL season.
Overton knocks Padikkal over
Dube has been pulled out of the attack after leaking 23 runs in his second over. Overton comes back on and pings the base of leg stump. Padikkal shuffles across for a scoop, but Overton goes full and fast and stops Padikkal on 50 off 29 balls. First IPL wicket for Jamie Overton in his fifth game.
Back-to-back fifties for Padikkal
Padikkal started in fifth gear against SRH on the opening night and stayed there. CSK didn’t allow him to start in top gear today. He was on 17 off 16 balls at one point. But he shifts up the gears by smashing Dube’s medium-pace for three fours and a six. He also steps out to Noor and cracks him over his head for six more. Padikkal has moved to 43 off 24 balls. The presence of the left-handed Padikkal has also kept left-arm fingerspinner Veer away from the attack. Mind you, Patidar is also a spin-basher. Veer could go two games without bowling a single ball.
In the 14th over, Padikkal brings up back-to-back half-centuries and points to the RCB badge on his jersey. The Chinnaswamy celebrates with the local boy. At the other end, captain Patidar is on 23 off 8* balls.
No fifty for Salt
Salt was on 15 off 16 balls at one point. These are not acceptable returns for an opener at the Chinnaswamy. RCB also have Bethell in the reserves, but Salt catches up.
Post powerplay, he latches onto Kamboj’s short balls, which are not quick enough, and swats him away for a brace of boundaries. He then takes on the left-arm wristspin of Noor and slog-sweeps him for six over midwicket.
Salt then tries to line up CSK’s sixth-bowling option Dube, but ends up holing out to deep square leg for 46 off 30 balls. Seems like a slower ball into the deck. It grips in the surface and doesn’t come onto the bat. Salt can’t manufacture enough power or elevation to clear Noor in the deep. Dube, bowling for the first time this season, provides CSK with a key breakthrough. RCB are 93 for 2 in the 11th over.
CSK match Khaleel up with Padikkal
Khaleel bowls his third over on the trot in the powerplay, encouraged by his head-to-head record against Padikkal. Before today, Khaleel had dismissed Padikkal in two T20 innings without conceding a single run.
Padikkal now scores his first run off Khaleel via a back-foot cut to sweeper cover. RCB are 51 for 1 in six overs.
Dube redeems himself
Dube runs in from long-on and makes it no mistake this time. Holds onto the ball with both hands. Kohli is gone for 28 off 18 balls, with Anshul Kamboj creating the breakthrough with his third ball. The drop has cost CSK 21 runs.
Kohli charged out Kamboj, but the latter banged it harder into the pitch and messed with Kohli’s timing, with long on and square leg out on the boundary.
In the same over, Kamboj brushes Salt’s outside edge with a hard-length delivery that veers away. Samson dives to his right, but can’t hold onto the chance. Samson tips it away towards deep third.
The ball isn’t sliding onto the bat and this in-between length has been difficult to put away. The outfield isn’t fast either
